BJJ Open Guard Passes
By professor Adrian Vera
As soon as close guard starts opening, you should get in combat stands immediately.
Once in combat stands it is important to block as much as you can completely bending your front knee, and sitting very close to your hill in order to avoid the opponent using the De la Riva.
Then start working your grips as close to the knees as possible:
If your grips are inside your opponent's knees, it is to do an inside pass through his legs.
If the grips are outside, you are going to do the pass around the opponent's legs.
Technique 2: Bullfighter Pass to Side Control
Get on combat position, work the outside grips on your opponent's knees
Push your hands and elbows together; (don't flare your elbows, keep them in)
then step back and push the opponent legs down (he will probably get in a sitting position
At this point, you pass the guard moving around his legs
Technique 3: Bullfighter Pass to Knee on Belly
Once you reach knee on belly, see techniques you can apply for submission from this position here
Technique 4: Flat Pass
This is a good technique to apply when the opponent tries to go for half guard or De la Riva hook
-
Once you are standing, get an inside knee grip on your opponent leg that is hooking your leg
-
Push his other knee to the same side.
-
Turn your outside knee underneath his knee
-
Then turn your hips facing his legs as you do the flap pass
